There is no shortage of Japanese restaurants in the Philippines, all with varied cooking styles and price ranges. Any place will either have a fast food off the counter style, or novel sushi bars where the food is carried around through long conveyor belts. Others, still have original takes on both the sights, sounds and taste of Japan. And there are those that give the feeling of exclusivity, like Senju inside the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel Manila.
This is very much apparent upon your sight of its entrance. Black tiles become its welcome mat with cobblestones decorating the sides and finished off with various pottery. Simple, yet elegant, and surprisingly, feels extravagant.
Japanese design ideas place emphasis on simple shapes and angles that do not confuse the eyes, and Senju’s interiors are true to this philosophy, with accents of modern concepts. This also translates to the presentation of the food wether it be the traditional Japanese or the fusion concepts.
The play in the neutral colors with accents of vibrance from garnishings makes the presentation of Senju’s food entrees visually pleasing. It is all in the simple coordination of details. Even food as mundane as dried fish appetizers or mucky looking like the sizzling strips of steak merit a few moments to appreciate the plating (and take pics of it, too!)
It doesn’t only look good, they taste great also. The Sashimis are fresh with no hints of slime, gindara teriyaki has the delicate smoky flavor, and the crazy maki is a must-order for the blend of crunchy bread crumbs partnered with the buttery marinade of the shrimp. As with most restaurants in prestigious hotels, expect to pay a premium.
The responsiveness may sometimes bog down especially when it gets jam packed, but the quality of the food is never compromised.
As with the other Shangri-La Hotels in the Philippines, courteousness is the strongest point of their service.
For those celebratory moments where hotel dining gives the fulfilling experience, Senju can be counted as one of the places to give the senses a treat with the balance of visual appeal and a flavorful satisfaction.
Senju is located at the 2nd Floor, Edsa Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.
Tel. Nos. +632-633-8888 loc. 2738 or 2739. Reservation is highly recommended.
